Peter Michael “Mike” Day, who was born and raised in Rumford, Maine, and who most recently resided in Land O’Lakes, Florida, passed away on October 22, 2024 at the age of 83.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janet Doris (Deniger) Day; his second daughter, Meara Day (Michael Williams); and his grandson, Owen Williams. His first daughter, Morgan Catherine Day, preceded Mike in death in February, 2023. In addition to immediate family, Mike is survived by his three siblings, Richard “Dick” Day (late Lucy Day), Suzanne Barker (late Donald Barker) and Christine Hoyt (David Hoyt), all residents of Maine, and by numerous nieces and nephews and siblings-in-law.

Mike was born on January 25, 1941, in Rumford, Maine, to (late) Edward Day and (late) Suzanne (Louvat) Day. He enjoyed an active, adventurous upbringing, playing numerous sports and going fishing and hunting with his dad and siblings. Mike was an athlete at Stephens High School, earning five varsity letters across football and basketball. He was also a strong student and served as Student Council President for two years. Mike went on to receive an academic
scholarship to Bowdoin College, and graduated with a major in History and a minor in Government.

Following graduation, Mike went on to attend Officer’s Candidate school for the U.S. Navy in Newport, Rhode Island. It was during his time there that he met a lovely young nursing student from Taunton Massachusetts; her name was Janet Deniger and the two quickly fell in love.

Mike and Janet married in Massachusetts in September of 1964 and soon after moved to Coronado, California, where Mike was stationed as a Naval Officer. It was in California where Mike and Janet welcomed their daughter, Morgan Catherine.

Mike went on to serve as a Lieutenant in Communications on the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Oriskany during the Vietnam War. Following that service, the young family moved back to the East Coast, living in Maryland while Mike worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.. Mike and Janet welcomed a second daughter, Meara Cathleen, and the family settled in Largo, Maryland.

Mike retired from the Navy and undertook additional studies to begin a career in finance. He became certified as a stockbroker and financial planner. This became his lifelong career and he worked for decades for various brokerage firms in Washington, D.C. (e.g., Lehman Brothers, Shearson Lehman, Morgan Stanley). Mike was hardworking and passionate about the stock market, but even more so, he took great pride in knowing his clients well and helping them
succeed. He maintained a loyal set of clients across his long career.

Outside of work, Mike and Janet found an extraordinarily tight-knit group of friends and neighbors in Largo. They were active in the local civic association, helping with events and projects. Mike especially took pleasure in working on Largo’s annual July 4th festival, assisting the professional pyrotechnicians with putting on truly impressive fireworks displays. Mike also did ongoing volunteer work for many years with the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. During the girls’ summer breaks, Mike and Janet would take them to spend time with family in New England, and Mike and Janet would take vacations on the coast of Maine. The family also
enjoyed vacationing in Ocean City, Maryland, where Mike would bring his surf-casting rod and try his luck fishing from the shore.

Mike carried his love of fishing with him throughout his life. He took some epic fly-fishing trips with buddies (in Yellowstone, the Rangeley Lakes in Maine, etc.), but also loved to just drive up to the Gunpowder River in Maryland on weekend mornings to fly-fish for trout in the mountain pools.

As they approached retirement, Mike and Janet decided to embark on another big adventure, relocating from Maryland to Florida, to enjoy year-round good sunshine and explore a different part of the country. There, they made many new friends even as they remained close with their friends back in Maryland. They enjoyed exploring the landscape and wildlife in their new hometown and went on several cruises, including one to Europe. They lived in Land O’Lakes,
Florida, for nearly twenty years before Mike’s passing.

Mike Day was a man beloved by all who knew him. He was a devoted, loving husband and father, and a caring friend. Mike was known for his warmth, his quick wit, his loyalty, generosity of spirit, and above all, his kindness. He is deeply missed and deeply loved
