George W. Ditmore II

September 19, 1940~April 17, 2025

George Walter Ditmore, of Trinity, FL and Grafton, NY, passed away on April 17, 2025, at the age of 84.  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda, and his two children, Andrew (Kathryn), of Great Falls, VA and their son William, and Susan Horita (Tosh), of Wesley Chapel, FL.  He was predeceased by his mother and father, Florence A. and Dr. Brant W. Ditmore and by his stepmother Ethel B. Ditmore.

George was born in Philadelphia, PA.  The family moved to Bennington, VT shortly thereafter.  He attended public school in Bennington until moving to Washington, DC and graduating from Western High School.  He went on to earn a BA from Harvard University on an NROTC scholarship.  Upon his graduation in 1962, George was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy, trained in nuclear power plant operation, and served in nuclear attack and fleet ballistic missile submarines interspersed with shore duty billets in the areas of fire control system and targeting support for the development of the Poseidon and Trident weapons systems.

In 1963, George began the greatest and most rewarding adventure of his life when he married Linda Harrison of Troy, NY.  They were blessed with the arrival of Andrew and Susan in Groton, CT, as the family migrated at the will of the Navy from Groton to Dahlgren, VA, Pearl Harbor, HI, Bremerton, WA, and, finally, Bellevue, NE, where George retired from the Navy in 1982 and completed an MBA at the University of Nebraska.  The family then moved to Fredericksburg, VA, where George began his civilian career with defense contractor EG&G in Dahlgren, VA.

George’s second retirement in 1997 led to a move to New Port Richey, FL.  He was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Tarpon Springs and the Tang Base (Tampa Bay area) of the United States Submarine Veterans, where he served as Vice Commander and editor of the monthly newsletter. George and Linda spent their summers at Forest Lake in Grafton, NY., where they were able to spend time with old friends and enjoy some of their grandson Will’s growth years in the forests and on the waters of Forest Lake.  George and Linda traveled and cruised extensively in these years.  George loved cruising on the surface for a change.

There will be a Celebration of Life at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1700 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs, FL on May 9 at 11am.  Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or All Saints Episcopal Church in George’s memory.

Mrs. Ditmore and family,
I am so sorry for your loss! You and Mr. Ditmore have been important members of my Forest Lake family since I was 6 months old and my family first visited FLP. As I became an adult he honored me by sharing his stories of his time in the US Navy, and I am grateful for his service.
I don’t know Forest Lake without him. He will be missed!

Ditmore Family,
John and I are sad to hear about George’s passing. I have many memories, especially working with George on exploring FLP camp history. Several years ago, we took a trip to Tarpon Springs to have lunch with George and Linda and poke around town. May God grant you peace in the days ahead.

What a good man w a rapier sharp mind. I shall miss our chats on things important and meaningless. Our entire FLP community will be diminished by his absence

Linda and Family,

Mark and I were sad to read the email that George had passed. As the newcomers to Forest Lake, you were both very welcoming to us. I, personally, enjoyed working with George on the Finance Committee and hearing his stories. He will be missed! You are all in our prayers.

As a youngster at FLP I used to watch George paddling his red canoe in the early morning hours and couldn’t wait until I was old enough to emulate his canoeing. Last summer George told
me he he wasn’t sure he would make another summer. I wish he had been wrong about that. Earlier today I thought about how happy and relieved George was when we bought Camp Barker. I’m so glad he was able to enjoy that bit of good fortune with all of us at FLP. Going to miss you old buddy. Especially at the flag raising on 4th July.
Semper Fi George.
