Melvin N Torrey “Mel” was born on May 10, 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He passed away at the age of 88 in Palm Harbor, Florida where he had lived for the past 25 years.  He was the middle child of James and Lillie Torrey who preceded him in death.  Mel is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Patricia; his children, Denice Torrey, Michael Torrey, and Cecil Trimble; his sister Bettye Oldham, and his brother Ralph Torrey; five grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mel spent 3 years in the army.  He retired from Gibson Greeting Cards where he worked as a lithographer for most of his 35 years at Gibson.  After retirement he moved to Florida in 2000 but continued to spend his summers in Cincinnati for many years.

While Mel excelled in many sports in his younger years, golf became the sport he played and loved the most.  He enjoyed competition and was respected for his accomplishments and skills on the golf course.  He shared his love of golf with many people by teaching and encouraging them.  Before Mel’s illness prevented him, he work with Rufus Lewis teaching elementary age children in an afterschool golf program in Tampa.

There were a number of golf groups that Mel played with throughout his life.  He was member of Greater Cincinnati Golf Club and Cincinnati Recreation Golf Association.  After retirement he was instrumental in the formation of the Tee Partners Golf League which played every Monday at Fairfield Golf Course.  In Florida, he was a member of Par and Bogie Golf Club.  Mel played in numerous tournaments or special golf outings which provided him with the competition he relished.

Mel enjoyed traveling, especially if it involved golf, playing poker with friends, teaching golf to adults and children, and socializing with people wherever he went. Mel’s life and determination were inspiring.  He was happy, outgoing, caring and a truly delightful person to be around.  He will be missed by many.

There will be be a small private memorial service in Florida.  A memorial service is being planned by friends in Cincinnati, Ohio for October 5, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Avon Field Golf Course.
