He was born on January 21, 1948, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, to the late Clair and Irene (Bair) Wentz. Garry spent a lot of time in his youth on the Bair family farm, where he learned the values of hard work and family – principles that guided him throughout his life.
A 1965 graduate of Hanover High School, Garry began his working life with Mummert Contractor and Hanover Canning Co. before answering the call to serve his country. He served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1970. During this time, he achieved the rank of Aviation Structural Mechanic Third Class, dedicating his skills to maintaining and supporting aircraft operations.
Garry was especially proud of his service in the Navy. He often shared stories of his time at sea, working both on helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and he spoke with excitement about joining pilots on test flights. His service reflected his skill, courage, and love for his country.
After completing his military service, Garry moved to Florida, where he began building both his career and his family. He worked for Eckerd Drugs before beginning a long and successful career with Publix Super Markets, where he served as a Produce Manager for more than 31 years, retiring in 2003. Garry took great pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and good humor.
Outside of work, Garry enjoyed watching sports, especially NASCAR, football, hockey and soccer. He liked tinkering with his pool chemistry, working in the yard, listening to Eric Clapton, playing guitar, singing, fishing and collecting coins. Garry was also the go-to guy when you needed advice on what car to buy next. He loved researching every detail, comparing pros and cons from Consumer Reports and Popular Mechanics, and would spend hours making sure you got not only the best deal but also the safest choice. Above all, he cherished time with his family and was deeply proud of his children and grandchildren, who meant the world to him.
Garry is survived by his wife, Audrey Wentz; his children, Bryan (Katherine) Wentz, Debra (Steven) Clark, and Anthony Roberts; his grandchildren, Sydney Wentz, Jacob Wentz, Maya Guzman, CJ Clark and Abigail Clark; and his siblings, Sharon (Tony) Lawrence, Scott (Shelly) Wentz and Tamara (David) Smith.
He will be remembered as a hardworking man who loved his family, served his country with pride, and lived his life with integrity, joy, and purpose
