Valerie Cagiano Tanella was born on July 25, 1936, in Hopatcong, New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Rosalie Balzano, owner of Rosalie’s Sweet Shop in Netcong, NJ, and Valentine “Deany” Cagiano of Dan’s Sunoco in Budd Lake, NJ. Valerie was the beloved wife of the late Anthony “Tony” Tanella of Clifton, NJ.

She is survived by her four children—Christine Tanella, Robert Tanella, Dean Tanella, and John Tanella—along with 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great source of joy and pride in her life.

Valerie attended Netcong High School, where she was both a cheerleader and an outstanding student, graduating as Salutatorian in 1954. After beginning her family, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her children while continuing her education through night school. In 1969, she earned her degree in early childhood education from William Paterson College and went on to serve for 28 years as a dedicated teacher in the Hopatcong, New Jersey school district. In recognition of her passion and commitment, she was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1988.

In 1997, Valerie and her husband Tony retired to Tarpon Springs, Florida, where she embraced life with energy and grace. She enjoyed playing tennis, volunteering at her church’s food pantry, and forming deep and lasting friendships. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life, and she lived it daily through kindness, generosity, and service to others.

Valerie entered eternal rest on January 7, 2026, just six months shy of her 90th birthday. She is now reunited with her beloved husband and welcomed home by the Lord she faithfully served.

Valerie was always cheerful and uplifting, and she never let anyone say goodbye without a hug. Her loving spirit, unwavering faith, and joyful presence will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
