Evangelos “Van” Crikis

October 09, 1938~January 24, 2026

Evangelos “Van” Crikis, age 87, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Cairo, Egypt, to Greek parents Costas and Anna Crikis, Van immigrated to the United States as a young boy, settling in New York City. He proudly became a U.S. citizen and, at the age of 17, enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a life defined by service, dedication, and adventure. He joined with hopes of becoming a pilot, but since the Air Force had other plans for him, he learned to fly on his own as a civilian and truly loved being in the air. It was during his time in the Air Force that he met the love of his life, Carolyn Kenner. Their enduring romance blossomed into a marriage that lasted 67 beautiful years, filled with shared joys, challenges, and unwavering commitment.

Van and Carolyn built their life primarily in Florida, where they raised their family, before enjoying a peaceful retirement in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Blairsville, Georgia. Professionally, Van worked as an electrical technician with an extraordinary gift for troubleshooting and solving even the most complex electrical system problems. His ingenuity and hands-on expertise made him the go-to person for anyone in need of help.

A devout Greek Orthodox Christian, Van’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a true pillar of the community, co-founding several churches and tirelessly contributing in every way possible—organizing Greek Festivals, leading fundraising efforts, assisting with building construction (including Orthodox churches), serving as a chanter, and guiding altar boys with patience and wisdom. His leadership extended beyond the church; he served as a natural leader in Boy Scouts, chaperoning countless school trips, and organizing memorable family vacations that created lasting memories for generations. He enjoyed boating, RVs, and working with his hands too—building several homes, barns, sheds and garages.

Van was the type of neighbor everyone wanted to have, always lending a hand and ready to help. In retirement, he found great joy in being an avid gardener, spending summers—and eventually full time—in Blairsville tending his garden, growing abundant vegetables that he generously shared with neighbors and friends. Above all, Van loved people—he was a true social butterfly who thrived on being around others, making them laugh with his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and delightful sarcasm, cracking jokes until the very end. He always kept in touch with family and friends, welcoming new faces and cherishing connections. His love of travel took him and his family on adventures near and far, always seeking new experiences.

Van is survived by his loving children: LeeAnn Lamby, Amy Crikis, and Michael Crikis and his wife Amber; his cherished grandchildren: Evan Crikis and Sarah George and her husband Steve; and many extended family members and friends whose lives he brightened.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Carolyn; his son, Anthony; his granddaughter, Laura; his parents, Costas and Anna; and his two sisters, Marina and Elly.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Dobies Funeral Home, 701 E. Tarpon Avenue, Tarpon Springs, FL 34689.
