Doria “Dory” Lopez Merced

June 19, 1942~April 20, 2026
Doria “Dory” Lopez Merced, age 83 of Gary, Indiana, went to join her Lord Monday, April 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, near and far. She was born June 12, 1942, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, to the late Encarnación and Elvira (Lopez) Rivera. Throughout her life, Doria treasured her family. As a protective big sister, she always demonstrated love, support, understanding, and resilience for her siblings. She was married at 16 and moved to Gary at the age of 20. She quickly embraced a community of friends who became family, an affectionate village intertwined in raising their children together through thick and thin. For several years, she worked as a crossing guard, on night shifts at restaurants, and as a seamstress for a mattress factory.

Dory was a “Little Warrior”. Widowed by 31, she was a mother who adored her children and persevered. She was blessed to have the honor and privilege of purchasing her family home on the corner of Madison Street, where she raised her 6 children and lived for over 50 years. Dory planted roots there with neighbors she loved. Her porch became a place where everyone was accepted, heard, and loved as they were.

Dory was authentic, free-spoken, had a sense of humor, and was enthusiastic. Especially when it came to softball & baseball. She proudly cheered the loudest in the stands over the years as she watched her sons, family, and friends play. She also loved the Chicago Cubs & Gary SouthShore RailCats. She sat in her favorite seat at all RailCats games.

Doria cherished her independence, freedom, and the simple but fulfilling pleasures of life. She was a Boricua who enjoyed her home, all types of music, great parties, gardening, taking the bus, and walking through the Village. She especially rejoiced in quality time with loved ones at Busch Gardens, eating out, celebrating holidays, and special occasions. She lived her life to the fullest on her terms and always advised us all, “Live Your Life.”

Doria was a Christian who had a strong faith in God. For decades, she attended Holy Angels Cathedral. She believed in God’s love for everyone and everything, and God’s will when plans were made, always stating “Si Dios permite o Si Dios quiere.” She constantly spoke blessings from Numbers 6:24-26 over her loved ones, stating: “Que Dios te bendiga, te acompañe y te favorezca.” We know her love, laughter, and strength will live on in every life she touched.

Doria is lovingly remembered by her children: Nelida Ortiz, Anilda (Tyrone) Parker, Ismael Merced, Juanita (Israel) Quinones, and Wilfredo Merced, and is reunited with her beloved daughter, Nidia Maria Merced. Her presence will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elba Concepción; her brothers, Heriberto Lopez and Angel Luis Lopez; her daughter-in-law, Janet Merced; and her grandchildren, Alphonso Merced, Mario “Sito” Ortiz Jr., and Sonora “Mama” Merced.

Doria took pride in tending to and living in her home on Madison Street in Indiana; now she will be laid to rest at 4244 Madison Street, New Port Richey, FL 34652, at Meadowlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens, at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, May 5th, 2026. Family and friends near and far are invited to join us in wearing your Chicago Cubs attire on this day to honor Dory.
