Michael E. Griggs

January 16, 1955~March 25, 2022

Michael Edward Griggs, 67, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 25th, 2022, following a tragic accident resulting in a fatal brain injury.

Mike was born on January 16, 1955, to Don and Martha (Marty) Griggs in Celina, Ohio. Mike attended and graduated co-valedictorian from Mendon-Union High School in 1973. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana where he graduated with majors in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics.

Mike had a celebrated athletic career at both Mendon-Union and Rose-Hulman. At Mendon, he lettered in three sports – basketball, baseball, and cross country. He was the Mercer County League “Double Digit” Scoring leader averaging over 20 points per game for three consecutive years during which time he also won All-League honors. Mike ended his career as the second-leading scorer in Mendon-Union history and was inducted into the Parkway/Mendon-Union Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2022.

Mike continued his illustrious athletic career at Rose-Hulman where he set the scoring record for freshmen, earned first-team All-Conference honors as a senior when he led the conference in assists and free throw percentage, and helped lead his team to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Mike was also a three-year letter winner in baseball and was inducted into the Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

Following graduation from Rose-Hulman, Mike worked for Proctor & Gamble in De Pere, Wisconsin, before returning home to Ohio and settling in Cincinnati. There he met his wife Karla and raised four children. He spent the last several years of his career working at The Gorilla Glue Company and retired in December 2021.

Mike was known by all as a kind and giving person with impeccable values and integrity. He never said a negative word about anyone – the exception being his beloved Cincinnati Reds and Bengals (prior to this year). He read the newspaper daily, loved watching all sports and playing golf, and finished each day with a slice of pie. He recently traveled with family to Dallas to attend the Cotton Bowl and root for the Cincinnati Bearcats, and a great time was had by all.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his close aunt and uncle, Janie and Jake Griggs. He is survived by his wife Karla Burtch; four sons Adam and his wife Shaney (Cincinnati, OH), Matt and his wife Meagan (Waynesboro, VA), Andrew (San Francisco, CA), and Jonathan (Cincinnati, OH); three grandchildren Mason, Jakey, and Hunter (Cincinnati, OH); brother Scott (Dallas, TX); sister Stacey (Cairo, OH); and nephews and nieces Nathaniel Griggs, Cory, Amanda, and Brandon Parks.

A celebration of life will be hosted at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (7701 Kenwood Rd) on Thursday starting at 2:30 pm. The family will receive friends and family beginning at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (www.goodshepherd.com), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), or the Ronald McDonald House of Cincinnati (www.rmhcincinnati.org).

To the Griggs family,
Doug and I are so sad to hear the news of Mike’s passing. We knew him through our son, Ben, who played bball with Jon as well as his fraternity brother.
We will always remember Mike’s kind and funny personality. We loved hanging with him at all of the basketball games. Loved that Jon called him “Big Jim”. He will be sooooo missed. Our hearts go out to his beautiful family.

With hugs and warmth,

My wife and I are so very sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. We grew up in different communities and competed against each other from Little League through high school -yet always considered each other friends. Truly a man of class and a wonderful human being. I was fortunate and blessed to have shared time with him at the Hall of Fame induction this past winter. Our sympathy goes out to the family. May God grant you peace in the days, weeks, and months to come.

Mike was so proud of you, his family, and he had a right to be proud. What a fine group you are – a tribute to Mom and Dad. He was a wonderful cousin. We were birthday buddies as we shared the same month and day, and we raced to see who could be the first to text “Happy Birthday!” to the other. We also texted back and forth during Cincinnati games, discussing questionable penalty calls. I will miss that. I will miss him dearly. He was a good man. So proud of him.

To the Griggs family;

Mike was a good friend who I graduated with at Rose-Hulman. Mike was also a great teammate on the Rose basketball team. There were four of us who played together for four years. Mike was a great competitor with a deadly accurate shot anywhere on the floor. I was shocked to hear this news of his passing and know that he will be badly missed by family and friends.

My prayers are with you during this time of grief.

I’m terribly sorry to learn of Mike’s tragic accident and death. He was one year ahead of me at Mendon-Union, so I probably cheered for every junior and senior high basketball game he played. He was friendly and positive, but so serious about his studies and sports that he didn’t seem interested when my best friend, Luanne, flirted with him (he was one of few guys tall enough for her to approach!).
I attended Mike and Karla’s wedding reception, and my oldest son and Adam played together a time or two. We exchanged Christmas cards for many years and I regret that we ever stopped. I pray that Karla, their sons, grandchildren, Scott, and Stacey will be comforted by the certainty that Mike has attained eternal rest. May they all have a broad, attentive support network, and the ability to count the ways their lives were enriched by their relationship with such an honorable, kind man. You’re all in my prayers.

I only met Mike Griggs one time in Vicksburg, MS. He was traveling with a group the week of Aug 31-Sept.3 2017
For the 16th Annual General Barton and Stovall History/Heritage Association Congress.
This group was staying at the Hampton Inn and so was I. I live here but had an unfortunate flood in my home and was staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites. I met Mike because my granddaughter and I were in a few rooms down from him. We met coming out of the elevator. I introduced myself and welcomed him to Vicksburg. As a result I became an honorary guest of the group with an itinerary , badge and told them I would be happy to drive them to the city cemetery to show them the way. I have never met a nicer, more humble man that made me feel that I had known him and this group for years. My sincere condolences to the Griggs family your husband and father was an extraordinary man with a gift that most everyone would love to have. He loved people, he loved his country, he loved the Sport of Basketball and I am certain his family was always in the forefront of his mind. May God give you peace and understanding that only he can give. I hope your wonderful memories with carry you through the difficult days ahead. May God Be with you. ✝️
