Frances Theresa (Wogrin) Rochford – 1922-2022

“I’m fine!” This simple phrase sums up the strong spirit that enabled Frances to overcome scarlet fever as a child and predictions of not being able to do many things. Scarlet fever left her with a heart murmur, but nothing stopped her for the next 99 years. She went on to marry George Rochford, the love of her life, and enjoy 55 years together before his death in 1997. She was told not to have more than one child because of the bad heart. “I’m fine,” she said as she gave birth to seven children: Barbara, Thomas, Joan, Steven, Marian, Kathryn and Rosemary. She was greatly loved by 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren who affectionately called her, “Great Mama.”

She and George moved from their childhood home in Denver, Colorado, to Los Angeles to Washington, D.C, and finally to Florida. They went through financial ups and downs, but always found a way forward. George treated her with respect and support that enabled her to accomplish many things. She was a Girl Scout leader of three different age groups at the same time. She was a leader in the Legion of Mary (at her parish in California) and co-founder of the West Pasco Pregnancy Center, which also trained people to establish and run other pregnancy centers.

Beyond the facts of a life well-lived, Frances nourished a family rooted in faith and love. Visitors found a warm and generous welcome. Catholic parishes found a willing volunteer and strong community member. Children found a supportive and forgiving center that enabled them to share the gifts that Frances gave them. One son became a Catholic priest as a member of the Society of Jesus, one daughter a research scientist. The family includes nurses, accountants, engineers, teachers and business people.

Over the years, Frances grew in wisdom and love as she became the center of a family whose generations grew in faith, love and successful living. She will always be remembered for her open arms and comforting laughter, her patient listening and her own font of rich stories.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 15 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Dobies Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs. The funeral Mass celebrating her life will be at St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish in Tarpon Springs at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 16.
