Duane L. Berry

December 25, 1934~June 21, 2022

Duane Lloyd Berry, 87, passed away on June 21, 2022, at his home in New Port Richey, Florida, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on December 25, 1934, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Lloyd D. Berry and Mildred T. (Osterhout) Berry.

Duane (known to most as “DB”) grew up primarily in Clearfield, Pennsylvania.  He graduated from Clearfield High School in 1952, served two years in the US Army with the Anti-Aircraft Artillery as Specialist 3rd Class, and graduated from Bucknell University in 1959 with a BS in Engineering. He was employed with Yost Associates, later Lee-Simpson Associates as a professional engineer and registered surveyor for 41 years.  Duane was licensed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, and North Carolina and was Vice President of Lee-Simpson Associates upon his retirement.

Duane married Carol Y. Kifer in 1959 in Clearfield, PA.  They were happily married for 62 years.  He is survived by his wife; two children: David Berry of Elizabethtown, PA; Andrea Berry-Guth, wife of Charles Guth of New Port Richey, FL; and one Grandson Noah Guth, also of New Port Richey, FL.  He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Mildred Berry.

Duane was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity at Bucknell University; a Life Member of Third Ward Fire Company; a Past President of the Red and Black Club; a Past President of the Clearfield Section and a Past National Director of the American Society of Highway Engineers; a Past Director of the Clearfield County Conservation District; Past President of Pennsylvania Mining Professionals; and a 76-year member of West Side United Methodist Church.

Duane was also a Life Member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 540 in Clearfield, PA. where he was a Past Exalted Ruler; Past Chairman of numerous committees, including the Elks National Foundation Committee, for which he was Assistant Chair at the time of his passing; a 25-year Past Chairman of the High Country Arts and Crafts Fair Food Services Committee; and a Past local Hoop Shoot Director.  He was also a 3-year Past State Director of the Pennsylvania Elks Hoop Shoot.

The highlight of Duane’s career with Yost Associates was realized in 1969-1971 when he served for two and one-half years as the project manager in the development of the first two rural electric cooperatives in the Philippines.  This project involved the design and construction of an electrical distribution system to serve rural areas on the Islands of Negros and Mindanao.

Duane was an avid sports fan, and he was loyal to his Clearfield High School Bison especially the wrestling, football, and basketball teams, continuing to follow them via radio broadcasts after moving to Florida.  The Nittany Lions football team, and in later years, the wrestling team had his devotion.  He and his Penn State Gang traveled to one away Penn State Football game each year for over twenty years – following them to many Bowl Games as well.  He also remained loyal to his Bucknell Bison Wrestling Team. After he started wintering and then moved full-time to Florida, he became a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (but the Pittsburgh Steelers always came first) and Tampa Bay Rays.

Duane’s other interests included gardening, grouse hunting, fishing, challenging games, drinking the occasional Yuengling, and spending time with friends and family.  He was a lover of nature and animals and appreciated the companionship of his grandpappy, Buddy.  Even during his last days, he enjoyed a nightly game of Rummikub and, throughout the day, Words With Friends – and with family!

Of all his hobbies and interests his greatest passion was for golf and for over 30 years he and his golfing linksmen traveled the Eastern Seaboard to play golf several times a year.  They were known for their “Almost Golf” adventures and tournaments, named the Kenneth J. Nicholson Memorial Golf Tournament when one of the original golfers passed away in 2011.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in Clearfield, PA in early July. Details to follow. His final resting place will be Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations are made to the West Side United Methodist Church at 317 Nichols Street, Clearfield PA 16830, or the Clearfield Elks Club No. 540 at 301 North Second Street, Clearfield PA  16830.

Duane joins so many other great men from the Elks in the highest tribute one can have bestowed in Clearfield, “He was a good guy.” Always enjoyed he and Carol. Was honored once to join his foursome at Beechwoods and had a heck of a good time. RIP.
