Gary D. Warner, 85, of Hudson, Florida, peacefully passed away on March 28, 2025. Born on May 13, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the cherished son of the late Jack and Alice (Warner) Brown. Gary attended the University of Michigan, where he majored in Hotel and Restaurant Management, setting the stage for a successful career in the hospitality industry.
After relocating to Florida, he served as comptroller for numerous large hotels throughout the state. His journey eventually led him to Everglades City, where he opened a small restaurant in the town’s historic abandoned train station. It was there that he met the love of his life, Birdie Garrett. Their union blossomed into a beautiful marriage, and together they returned to the Tampa Bay area to open another beloved establishment, Dog and Suds.
Gary’s career brought him full circle back to the hotel industry, where he dedicated many years of service before retiring in the 1990s. His professional life was characterized not only by his achievements but also by the relationships he forged with colleagues and guests alike. Known for his warmth, kindness, and unwavering commitment to excellence, Gary left a lasting impression on everyone he met.Married for 57 wonderful years, Gary and Birdie shared a love for camping, a passion they instilled in their daughter and grandchildren over the years. Their relationship served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Following Birdie’s passing in February 2024, Gary continued to honor her memory by cherishing the time spent with his daughters and grandchildren.A devoted father and grandfather, Gary was a guiding light in the lives of his family, referred to by his grandchildren as “the kindest man they have ever known.”
He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Warner of Hudson; his stepdaughter, Linda Shaw of Largo; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his brother, William Warner of Michigan. Gary’s legacy extends beyond his family.
He was a friend to everyone he encountered, known for his cheerful whistling and generous spirit. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a laugh.
As we remember Gary, let us celebrate a life rich in love, laughter, and dedicated service to others.
He will be deeply missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
