After a hard-fought battle with cancer, Gyula Horvath, 89 passed away peacefully on March 17, 2022. He spent his final days at home surrounded by his loving family. Gyula (or George, as he preferred to be called) was born January 4, 1933, in Budapest, Hungary, and grew up in a small family with his mother, father, and brother. He was a graduate of Hungarian Military Academy, studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and performed with the Vienna Philharmonic. Before emigrating from Hungary, he defended his country during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 as an Army Captain from the Soviet Army and the communist’s régime.
He immigrated to New York, NY in 1959, started his family, and then moved to Bergenfield, NJ where he coached the swim team at the town pool. He also enjoyed coaching water polo. George completed his career retiring from the New York City Transit Authority after 20+ years and moved to Florida to live out his golden years.
George was married for over 61 years and is survived by his loving wife, two daughters, two sons, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren (and one on the way). He was a fun-loving man who enjoyed his wife’s cooking, classical music, reading, telling jokes, debating, traveling, competitive swimming, water polo, and celebrating life to the fullest when surrounded by his family. In 2007 he was diagnosed with cancer and lived out the last moments of his life embraced by his family.
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, May 14, 2022 (10:00 AM) at St Vincent De Paul Catholic Church in Holiday, Florida.

Andi,
I am so sorry for your loss. Reading about the life your dad lived, shows that he enjoyed and made the most out of all the opportunities life gave him. The world could use more men like your dad. Please let me know if you need anything

George was a true gentleman as I knew him briefly years ago. He always greeted me and my dogs each day with a smile and a wave. He will surely be missed by his wonderful family who I had the honor of knowing and still know. My condolences to his wife and whole family.

Coach George, I’m so sad that I waited too long to search for you. I still hear your voice sometimes, encouraging me, teaching me that I can do things that seem impossible, making me laugh, and sharing little bits and pieces of your life story along the way. I’m honored to have been coached by you! You’ll never be forgotten. R.I.P.
