Joan L. Bittle passed away Sept. 6 at her home in Tarpon Springs, Fla. She was 83.
A resident for more than 20 years, she was an active member of the Tarpon Springs community, particularly the Advent Health North Pinellas Auxiliary. She served as auxiliary president from 2009 to 2011 and was noted for her dedication and willingness to fill in wherever needed, accruing more than 7,800 volunteer hours. In 2019 she was honored with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for her work.
In addition, she had served on the board of her homeowners association and was currently in the diaconate board for the Holiday United Church of Christ, where she attended services regularly and participated in volunteer work.
Born in New Brunswick, NJ, Joan was a graduate of New Jersey State Teachers’ College (now Kean University), earning a bachelor’s degree in education in 1958. A longtime resident of Berlin, NJ, she taught elementary school in communities such as Atco and Cherry Hill, NJ.
A certified master gardener, she was also an avid painter, particularly of animals and nature scenes. She displayed her work at shows and would sometimes take commissions to paint portraits of pets.
She is survived by a son, Scott; a daughter, Erika Hann; and a grandson, Kevin. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Mulford W. Bittle Jr.
Services are private but her memory will be honored during services Sept. 27 at the Holiday United Church of Christ, 4826 Bartelt Rd, Holiday, FL 34690.
