Life is short, but in a mixture of love and fear we keep this secret from our children. So eager to protect them from the reality of our own mortality, eager to shield them from the hard-won knowledge that our time together is finite, incredibly challenging, and (if you’re lucky) deeply rewarding. Perhaps this is unfair, perhaps we should measure life not by how long it is, but how good it is. How many souls did you touch just by walking into a room? How many days did you brighten just by being there? How did your simple acts of daily kindness make the world a more tolerable place for family and strangers alike? These are the measures of a good life. May you all be as good as Katie.
I will leave you with a poem:
Life is short, and we’ve all shortened ours
in a thousand delicious, ill-advised ways,
I’ll keep from my children.
The world is at least fifty percent terrible, and that’s a conservative estimate, though I keep this from my children.
For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird.
For every loved child, a child broken.
Life is short and the world
is at least half terrible, and for every kind
stranger, there is one who would break you,
though I keep this from my children.
I am trying to sell them the world. Any decent realtor,
walking you through a real shithole, chirps on
about good bones: This place could be beautiful,
right? You could make this place beautiful.
Katie, each day, in her own way, tried to make this place beautiful. Honor her by doing the same.

So sorry for your loss. Katie took care of my dog, Duke at Fluties. He absolutely adored her. She will be missed by me and my fur baby. Rest in peace Katie. Fly with the angels and be free. We will think of you often, but you will never will be forgotten as you will always live in everyone’s hearts. Such a beautiful girl and beautiful soul.
