Stavro Mago, loving husband and father, passed away at age 93 on Sunday March 7th peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Stavro was born on August 21, 1927 in Bronx, NY to Angelo and Lefcothea (Vlasides) Mago. In 1945, he joined the Merchant Marines and served aboard a Liberty Ship in the Pacific arena during WWII. After the war, he continued working at sea for the American Fruit company as a Chief Engineer, traveling extensively around the world.
On December 7, 1958, Stavro left his mariner career when he married Mary Psaros at Koimisis Greek Orthodox Church in New York. They raised two children, Angelo and Constance, in Brooklyn before moving to Tarpon Springs in 1969, where Stavro worked for the Pinellas County Water Department as a Water Plant Operator and Maintenance Technician, retiring in 1995.
Stavro had a passion for building, repairing, or improving almost everything whether at work or at home. His workshop was the original Home Depot as he stocked any part or tool that would be required for working on projects, both at home and for his neighbors. When not in his workshop you could find Stavro at the barbecue, which of course he built himself, grilling his favorite, roast lamb in the traditional Greek way – on his handmade σούβλα (souvla).
Stavro was preceded in death by his father, Angelo, and his mother, Lefcothea. He is survived by his wife Mary, his son Angelo (Teri) and his daughter Constance (Christopher) Tanner. His funeral service will be held on March 16, 2021 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Tarpon Springs at 10 am. As a veteran of the United States Armed Forces, Stavro will be interred at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
Donations may be sent to the Parkinson's Foundation.

I am so sorry to here the passing of Stavro. He was a friend a co-worker a mentor. Worked with Steve for many years which was an honor to be associated with him. A memorable time was when after his retirement my wife and I were invited to Stavos and Mary fifty year anniversary. That shows the type of person he was (we were bonded like family).
