February 24, 1926~January 29, 2021

James Charles Hutchinson Sr., age 94 of Hudson, died peacefully in his home on Friday, January 29. Born in Swissvale, Pennsylvania on February 24, 1926, he was the second of four children born to the late William Alfred “Alf” Hutchinson from Glasgow Scotland and Bridget Louise Finlay from Belfast, Ireland. After his first flying lesson with noted aviatrix Teresa James at age 15, he developed a lifelong love of flying, and proudly served his country as a Radar Mechanic Navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. After the war Jim and his family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut where he met the love of his life, Doris Jean Taylor. In 1955, they were married at Saint Aloysius Church, where all of their children received their sacraments. With his brothers-in-law Steve Walsh and Richard Taylor, Jim built their family home in New Canaan and lived there three decades. Jim was an entrepreneur, always willing to tackle new things. He was a mechanic, an aerial photographer, and a Kodak model who appeared in countless advertisements. Jim found his true calling working his way up through the restaurant business, starting as a waiter at Chimney Corners in Stamford, Connecticut. A quick learner and astute businessman, he became co-owner of Pierre’s Restaurant in New Canaan during the 1960s. He broadened his career in hospitality, becoming the manager of the Red Barn Restaurant in Westport, Connecticut, and later assistant manager of Wee Burn Country Club in Darien, Connecticut. He spent the last ten years of his career as general manager of the Country Club of Darien, having earned a sterling reputation among country club managers. Jim and Doris retired to Florida in 1989. Golf had always been a staple in Jim’s life, but once retired, it became a consuming passion. A better than scratch golfer, Jim’s focus on the art of the swing seldom failed to infiltrate his conversations. Jim also became a Country Western line dance instructor and student of Tai Chi. Jim and Doris lost their eldest son James C. Hutchinson Jr. in 2015, and granddaughter Courtney Lynn Hutchinson in 2020. He was predeceased by his brother William “Al '' Hutchinson of Longmont, Colorado and his sisters, Grace H. Walsh of New Canaan and Gloria Frank of Riverton, New Jersey. In addition to his loving wife Doris, Jim is survived by his daughter-in-law Debbie Stewart Hutchinson of Norwalk, Connecticut; daughter Maureen Bundick and her husband Terry of Conroe, Texas; daughter Sharon Halstead and her husband Mark of Fairfield, Connecticut; daughter Tracy Hutchinson of Denver, Colorado; and son Kevin Hutchinson and his wife Stella of Medina, Ohio. Jim also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Jennifer Thompson, James C. Hutchinson III, Bryan Hutchinson and his wife Andrea; Kyle Hutchinson and Lauren, Bridget Halstead, Sam Halstead and Margaret-Agnes Halstead; his brothers-in-law Peter Frank, Richard Taylor and Donald Taylor; and many cherished nieces and nephews. The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the Pasco County Veterans Services. Memorial Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital www.stjude.org or Shriners Children’s Hospital https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/ . Arrangements pending.

My heart is full of so many memories of Uncle Jim. Growing up across the street, spending time with him, Aunt Doris and my cousins, swimming in the pool. Christmases at Grandma and Grandpa's, and Uncle Jim bringing out a glass of coke for me when I parallel parked the car in front of Pierre's when practicing for my driver license with Dad. Just so many wonderful memories to list, but lovely to have and cherish forever. I love you Uncle Jim.

I have very fond memories of my Uncle Jim, growing up across the street and enjoying many fun times with my cousins. I recall the day Uncle Jim took all the kids (required a few runs) in his boat out to Cockenoe Island, he was delayed in getting some of us back until he could get the propeller fixed from hitting a sandbar. Thankfully I got to have my turn at driving when we were on our way out!
He had a wonderful calmness about him and always there with a smile and a hug.
I loved Uncle Jim.

Dear Hutchinson Family,
My heart goes out to you.
I have fond memories of being an “honorary Hutchinson” when you needed a sixth Irish dancer to perform the 6-Hand Reel at the country club during the St. Patrick’s Day season.
