Joan Kathleen Karras, born on June 14, 1937, in Providence, RI, passed away on March 4, 2025, surrounded by family.
She was charismatic, empathetic, and considerate to everyone lucky enough to know her. Joan is predeceased by her son Nicholas and survived by her children Dianne and Andrew; her grandchildren Josh, Justin, Cody, and Tyler; and her great-grandchildren Holden and Finley.
Joan worked as a registered nurse and twice retired from St. Joseph’s hospital in Tampa, FL, where she cared for countless patients. In her free time, Joan enjoyed playing scrabble and Gin Rummy, spending time with family, and going to the casino, dinners with all her friends especially Jan, Sandy and Sherry. She also took pleasure in outdoor activities like gardening and hanging out by her pool (although she never learned how to swim).
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date, and details will be shared with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the AIDS Foundation in Nicholas Karras’ honor.

To Joan’s family, Sincere condolences on your loss. I worked with Joan many years ago. As nurses we worked hard but always found a moment to share humor and had many laughs! May she rest in peace.

Prayers for eternal rest and comfort to the family. Joan was a colleague and friend from St. Joseph’s. Enjoyed getting together with her at the reunion luncheons. We shared many laughs.

So sorry to hear about Joan’s passing. We worked together at St. Joseph’s Main in Tampa. We had a lot of great times working together. She was my Charge Nurse when I first came to St. Joe’s and taught me so much. She truly loved taking care of her patients and she showed such compassion towards them. Joan was my buddy from Providence. Rest in Peace, Rhode Island.
