“His arms were the first place we felt safe and his memory is where we will always find comfort.”
José (often called Rico and Papi) was known for his love of fútbol, his Yankees but most of all for his greater love of his family. Papi treasured time spent with them.
José was a loyal employee of Ferrara Bakery & Cafe in Little Italy, where he worked with pride and dedication for 36 years. On special occasions, such as birthdays, he never came home empty-handed. It was always a treat when we were the recipients of their delicious Italian pastries, cookies and their well known rum cake. Yes, rum cake for the kids’ birthdays!
José was born in Sabanagrande, Honduras to the late Catalina Aguilar. From the time he was a young boy, Rico learned the value of hard work helping around the farm which was a foundational experience that shaped his strong work ethic.
Papi was preceded in death by his loving wife, Maria Antonia, his daughter, Dilcia Lawson (Kemal) and his siblings. He is survived by his children, Claudia (Doug), Yvonne (Joe), Felipe, Ruby and Dinorah (Javier); and 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Papi gave us a lifetime of steady guidance, fierce protection and a heart that had room for everyone. His family was his pride and joy and his greatest devotion in life was the people he loved.
