Lee was a contributor to the Dry Dock facility helping people do community service so they could get their lives back on track, he volunteered to do many things including participating in the golf tournaments and he was also a long time board member helping to make the Dry Dock facility a safe place for recovery from problems with alcohol and drugs. He was honest and a proud veteran.

Dear Lee’s family,
I was fortunate enough to get to know Lee at the Dry Dock. He will be sorely missed. We were all better for having known him.
God bless you all during this difficult time.

Sarge … I remember you and I with the our trucks carried the luggage for the mission trips. You shared many wise thoughts with us over the years. We always enjoyed sitting around listening to your stories.

Today I learned that yet another childhood friend had passed away: Lee Carrus. Lee and I met in grade school PS244 and attended Meyer Levin (JHS285) and, if my memory serves me correctly, Tilden High School. Lee and I used to spend time at his parents luncheonette on Church Avenue and East 54th Street. His parents were nice people. His father worked the grill and counter and was always pushing hamburgers on us. His Mom reminded me of Martha Ray always happy and laughing. We went our separate ways. I married and moved to Long Island. My sister in law was decorating her parent’s house on East 17th Street for a party when I walked in. She introduced me to a guy who was helping her and when he turned around to meet me I recognized him to be Benjie, Lee’s brother and Benjie remembered me. So I met Lee again years later when he dated and married the sister of my first wife. Lee and Esther had two children. We spent a little time together as family couples. I moved to Long Island and we once again went our separate ways. Lee served his country, I believe in the reserves. I had a chance to speak to Lee again when the local Army Reserve Recruiter came to ask me to join the Reserve as an officer. The deal sounded great until Lee reminded me of the reality of what the recruiter was actually saying. Lee set me straight on that issue. As life moved on, we both separated from our wives and we both remarried. It appears Lee moved to Florida. I moved back to Brooklyn. Lee is fondly remembered. The little time we spent together were good times. Rest in peace Lee.
