Mary Costides was born March 17, 1931, on the island of Andros, Greece to Konstandinos and Filio Lavdas. She passed away peacefully at her home in Holiday, Florida on September 5, 2026. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Staff Sergeant Nondas “Nick” Costides (US Army Retired), her parents, her sister Presvytera Vasiliki Psaros, her brother Leonidas Lavdas, her sister Irini Skreki and her niece, Maria Kanakis. Mary is survived by her son, Nick Costides and daughter-in-law, Leslie Costides, and daughter, Athena Getschal, and son-in-law, Cooper Getschal. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Antigoni Lavdas, nephew, Dean Lavdas and wife, Ioanna Lavdas, nephew, Steve Lavdas, her brother Dimitrios Lavdas and sister-in-law, Thalia Lavdas, her sister, Helen Athanasoulis and brother-in-law, Nondas Athanasoulis, nephew, Bill Athanasoulis and wife, Sherry Athanasoulis, niece, Filio Athanasoulis, nephew, Ioannis Psaros and wife, Athena Psaros, niece, Filio Psaros, nephew, Kostandinos Psarros, her grandson, Nick Costides and wife, Darby Costides, grandson, Michael Costides and Wife, Michelle Costides, granddaughter, Brooke Cason and Husband, Clay Cason, granddaughter, Amber Slaughter, granddaughter, Katrina Costides-Hong and Husband, Jared Hong, and granddaughter, Dana Estabrook. Mary was also blessed with many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Mary was a retired cosmetologist, homemaker and a devoted, loving, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Mary was devoted to her Greek Orthodox faith and was the matriarch of the family instilling strong family values. She was a seamstress who made beautiful dresses. She was an amazing cook and baker and has passed down her recipes to the younger generation. Characterized by profound generosity, Mary consistently aided those in need without hesitation. Although we will miss her greatly, we know that she has received her Angel’s Wings and has gone on to join her family in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Mary Costides’ name to either St. George Greek Orthodox Church or Hospice c/o Chapters Health System at chaptershealth.org.

I would like to thank God for such a wonderful Grandmother. Mary would always work so hard to help others, and she would always put other people’s needs before her own. My Grandmother Mary was one of the most giving and hard-working people I’ve ever known. Whenever I would visit, she would come home from work and start cooking and taking care of Papa Nick (her husband).
A wonderful memory of her was when I would call and ask for a recipe. She never measured, so she tried to guess the amounts—so mine did not turn out as tasty. I grabbed the opportunity at Easter to stand by her side (with my pen and paper to write down the amounts) and help her make some of my favorite Greek dishes. Whenever I make those dishes, I think of Mary with a smile on my face.
I will forever be grateful for my Grandma Mary, for she never gave up. She always thought of others and gave of herself until the end.

She lived a life for others and gave me many of my core childhood memories. She was one of the few people that truly loved and cared for others and was always thinking about them. Although we grieve her passing, I thank God for the hope we have that death is not the end. Until we meet again, Great Grandmother Mary.

Mary became my stepmother in 1969, when I was 23 years old and already starting a young family of my own. Although I never lived in the same home with her, I came to know her through the many visits, shared holidays, and family gatherings that followed. Over the years, I saw in her a quiet grace, a steady dignity, and a deep devotion to my father that never wavered. She created a warm and welcoming home, and she treated our growing family with kindness and genuine affection.
Through our visits together, Leslie and I came to appreciate the wonderful qualities Mary had — her gentleness, her thoughtfulness, and the way she cared for others without ever seeking attention. Over time, she also came to know and love all five of our children, each of whom formed their own special bond with her. Together, we were fortunate to share many years with her and to witness the strength she showed, especially after my father passed.
We are grateful for the long span of life we shared with Mary. Her presence enriched our family, and her memory will remain a blessing to all of us.
May her memory be eternal.
