RUTH H. DONOHUE, on July 17, of New Port Richey, Florida, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Ocean City, NJ. Age 91, Ruth passed away at home in the loving arms of her husband Ed Donohue after 68 years of marriage. A fabulous wife and mother to 3 children, Edward F. Donohue III (Mary), Karin Purcell (Joe), and Robynn Mack, she was grandmother to 7, great grandmother to 12 and Aunt Ruth to many nephews and nieces. Ruth was predeceased by sisters Hattie (Kenneth) Colton, Mary (George) Teroka, Lillian (Harold) Brookman and brother Frank (Kim) Kawahara. Ruth was born near Portland, Oregon and during World War II along with her entire family was ordered to move to the Minidoka Interment Camp for Japanese Americans in Idaho. After release, her family moved to St. Charles, MO where she attended high school and Lindenwood College. After graduation she worked for American Airlines and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where she met her future husband Ed who was in the Air Force, while standing in line for a cup of coffee and married soon after. After Ed was discharged from the Air Force they moved to Syracuse, NY while Ed attended college at Syracuse University and the family followed Ed’s coaching career moving to Belfast, NY, Poughkeepsie, NY, then Niagara Falls, NY, where Ed coached basketball and baseball at Niagara University. Ruth began her teaching career and received her Masters’ Degree from Niagara University. In 1968 the family moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA, when Ed became head basketball coach and Athletic director at King’s College. Ruth began a long career at Luzerne County Community College as Head Counselor of Nursing and while there went to Penn State for her doctorate receiving an ABD (All but Dissertation). In 1969 the family bought a shore home in Ocean City, NJ and spent their summers enjoying friends and family at the beach until just a few years ago when health problems made it difficult for them to travel. In 1972 Ed and Ruth suffered through the Hurricane Agnes flood when their Wilkes-Barre home and both of their colleges were severely damaged. After retiring Ruth and Ed moved to New Port Richey, Florida and enjoyed many years of travel throughout the world including Europe, Australia and New Zealand plus attended almost every NCAA Final Four tournament. Ruth was a strong willed yet warm and compassionate wife and mother, with a famous nickname of “The General” given by her husband and family. Ruth loved Ed’s coaching career and was his most loyal fan, never missing a game and traveling to every away game on the team bus. She enjoyed hosting the players and friends to parties at their home and many basketball players still fondly remember Mrs. D for her cheering and booing of referees during the games. In the last few years of her life Ruth suffered with Alzheimers but was still happy and pleasant, working in her home office, enjoying rides in the car, eating out in restaurants, singing patriotic songs, and sharing candy bars and snacks with everyone she met. She still loved and knew her husband Ed right to the end. Ruth will be missed by all her family, friends and aides who became a part of her life. There will be a Celebration of Life for Ruth when safely possible.
